March Art Spotlight!

Artist: Lance Jost | Surfers at Sunset | 2009 | Dana Point Pedestrian Bridge

Longtime Dana Point resident and artist Lance Jost has helped shape the visual character of our city through his many public art installations, including mosaics and the fountain at La Plaza Center. Fun fact: in 1970, Jost was commissioned to create the iconic Electric Lady mural for rock legend Jimi Hendrix shortly before his passing — a piece now recognized as a prime example of 1960s mural work.

This month’s Art Spotlight features Jost’s vibrant Surfers at Sunset mosaic at the Dana Point Bridge. Installed when the bridge opened in 2009, the mosaic adds color and coastal charm to one of the city’s most recognizable gateways.

David Keitel of Domusstudio | Gloria Dei Lutheran Church | 2017

The campus blends architecture and landscape to create an open, welcoming space centered on connection and community. A memorial garden with a labyrinth, stone seating, native plants, and a gathering area complements the transparent sanctuary, linking indoor and outdoor spaces.

Designed by David Keitel of domusstudio, the master plan prioritizes shared spaces and natural flow. The result is a contemporary setting that encourages gathering, reflection, and community across generations.

Ashley Keene an Arts Ambassador. She is part of the weekly Saturday Farmers Market. @danapointfarmersmarket

Ashley is a local mix media visual artist and designer who has created art her entire life. Growing up near the beach, her artwork is heavily influenced by the local surf culture and ocean vistas, inspiring an array of bright colors that give her artwork a surreal and dreamlike ambiance.

Launched in 2020, Dana Point’s Utility Box Public Art Program enhances utility boxes with artwork reflecting local culture and history.

Dana Point Art’s Ambassadors selected the box at Golden Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive to feature archival photos from the Dana Point Historical Society, including The Last Day of Surfing, taken on August 29, 1966, at the iconic “Killer Dana” wave just before harbor construction began. The photo was also placed in a 1966 harbor time capsule and reopened in 2016.

Featured photos are available for purchase through the Dana Point Historical Society.

Laura Seely was selected to create, 'Sea the Point', a 5x5 elephant sculpture inspired by marine life off the Dana Point coast. Blending features of the Asian elephant and blue whale, she hand-painted a poem highlighting the challenges facing both species.

When it comes to cool art and unique museums, Dana Point is hard to beat. In celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month in October, the City of Dana Point launched the trolley tours in 2023 to provide memorable experiences for residents and visitors.

Two tours will be available — at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. — during a wide-ranging city art and history expedition. There will be a total of 10 stops, including locations such as the Lantern Bay Park stairs, the Hide Drogher Sculpture and Watermen’s Plaza.

Artist: Cliff Wassmann | "Tall Ships" | Del Obispo & Village Rd. | 2020

In 2020, local artist and photographer, Cliff Wassmann, was selected to have his tall ship photography featured in the local utility box art program. His design features a colorful array of photos he was inspired to take of the tall ships in Dana Point Harbor. Wassmann has long paid homage to this piece of local maritime history and has photographed many tall ships over the years, offering fine art prints of them and other classic Dana Point scenes.

In 2024, artist Noche, whose real name is Juan Pablo Melchum Alba, collaborated with the Mares Foundation to bring a colorful and creative vibe to the Ocean Institute with a new mural. Staff at the Ocean Institute provided input on ideas and Noche went to work creating the large 17 ft tall x 56 ft wide mural. 🎨

The mural reflects the ocean's ecosystem off of Dana Point, including many plants and animals that call the offshore area their home. 🐢 Noche is a huge proponent of using his art, and art in general, to inspire ocean literacy to kids and the community, emphasizing the ebbs and flows of a healthy ecosystem in our oceans. 🐟🌊

This public walkway at Strands Vista Park is 1,400 feet long with three ocean overlook areas. A custom designed technique was used to incorporate mosaic-type designs, surface seeded select aggregates, integral colored pavement, pebbles, colored glass, and seashells 🐚 together with fish 🐟 and other marine life creatures. The same theme is carried into the low garden walls, located around benches and the park signs. Sea stars made of bronze are also integrated into the low walls. ⭐

Artist: Randolph Rose | Summer Fun | Pines Park | 2016

In October 2016, a Randolph Rose sculpture titled "Summer Fun" was unveiled and dedicated in Pines Park to celebrate Art & Humanities Month. The bronze sculpture depicts two children sitting on a log playing with a turtle.

In 2016, Mayor John Tomlinson said, "My kids have been playing here since they could walk. What better place to have this sculpture."

Artist: Randolph Rose | Summer Fun | Pines Park | 2016

In October 2016, a Randolph Rose sculpture titled "Summer Fun" was unveiled and dedicated in Pines Park to celebrate Art & Humanities Month. The bronze sculpture depicts two children sitting on a log playing with a turtle.

In 2016, Mayor John Tomlinson said, "My kids have been playing here since they could walk. What better place to have this sculpture."

🌟 May Art Spotlight 🌟

Artist: Ashley Keene | "Epiphany" Elephant Parade | Pines Park | 2013

In 2013, Dana Point welcomed an international exhibition called the “Elephant Parade” and became the first city in the United States to host the outdoor art event. Artists and celebrities of all kinds participated in creating their artwork on large 5’x5’ elephant sculptures, in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the plight of the Asian elephant.

The local community was encouraged to participate as well and a call went out for artists in the area. Ashley Keene, a local artist and current Arts and Culture Ambassador, jumped at the opportunity to be involved. “I originally thought the competition was to paint a smaller elephant, but quickly realized after I’d been chosen that the elephant sculpture I would be painting is the size of an actual baby elephant.” Keene’s artwork focused on a positive message of peace and love, with the main goal being to foster an understanding and empathy between humans and animals.

Keene’s creation, “Epiphany” was originally auctioned off in 2013 and purchased as a wedding gift and symbol of love, from husband to wife. After years with Barry and Calleen Berg, “Epiphany” was graciously donated back to the city and now resides at Pines Park in Capistrano Beach.

Artist: Aleena Malik | Salt Creek Beach Tunnel | 2018

In 2018, Orange County Parks and the art department at Dana Hills High School collaborated to create a new mural for the tunnel at Salt Creek Beach. 🌊

A mural design contest amongst high school students encouraged students to develop their own ideas for the mural, with over 200 competing designs submitted for consideration. 🎨

A panel of 10 declared Aleena Malik, then 16, the winner of the contest. Malik stated that she designed the colorful mural in her digital photography class earlier in the school year. Her mural came to life in March 2018, with more than 50 South Orange County School of Arts (SOCSA) students from Dana Hills High School contributing to the creation of the mural. The large 22x50 ft mural depicts Salt Creek’s strong association with surfing, featuring a Volkswagen bus and a female surfer as a tribute to the beach’s rich surfing history. 🏄

In 2023, award-winning artist @miatavonatti created the transformative mosaic staircase, hand-crafted from glazed ceramic tiles, overlooking the Dana Point Harbor.

Approximately 364 feet of mosaic tile were installed on the stairs to create a cresting wave design, which took roughly 10 months to create and close to 3 months to install. 🌊 Throughout the project, other artists were brought in to help the huge undertaking, including artists in residency from Australia, Canada, Puerto Rico, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

When presenting the project, Tavonatti noted that she wanted the design to contrast the harsh lines of the stairway. “I’m known for my water, my light and my motion, and I wanted to create something three-dimensional that actually defied the steps and that you almost forget the steps are there.”

On April 12, 2010, the Veterans Memorial Park at Strands Vista Park was dedicated to commemorate all five branches of armed service. Colonel Willard A. Buhl, Commanding Officer of the 5th Marine Regiment, on behalf of Brigadier General L.D. Nicholson, Marine Expeditionary Brigade Commanding General, presented Mayor Steven Weinberg with a certificate that accompanied an American Flag that was flown over Camp Leatherneck in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan on February 21, 2010.

Every Veterans Day, the City and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9934 rededicate the monument.

🎨 Each trolley will have an Art Ambassador and a docent from the Dana Point Historical Society to provide information and insight at all the stops. The wide-ranging city tour will include locations such as the Lantern Bay Park Stairs, Doheny Village Mural, Hide Drogher Sculpture, Watermen’s Plaza, and Woodruff Homes, among a total of 10 stops. The tour lasts for approximately an hour and 30 minutes.

🌟 September Art Spotlight 🌟

Artist: Lubica Selecka | Tall Ships Mosaic | 2009 | Dana Point Bridge

In 2009, Lubica Selecka was commissioned by the City of Dana Point to create a vibrant mosaic for the then-new Dana Point pedestrian bridge.

Inspired by a photograph taken by Cliff Wassman of the “Spirit of Dana Point,” she began creating the mosaic at her studio in Capistrano Beach. “She crafted the ship with hand cut mosaic tiles in a style she compared to brush strokes.” Selecka added a personal touch to her artwork by inserting herself, family members, friends and even her dog as passengers on the ship. These people were created by a photo emulsion process that Selecka developed directly onto the tiles.

“The Spirit of Dana Point”, a 118-foot replica of the Revolutionary War-era privateer schooner, is part of the Ocean Institute’s living history program and is its signature tall ship. ⛵

In 2019, award-winning painter and mosaic artist, Mia Tavonatti, was commissioned by the City of Dana Point to create a public mosaic of the iconic “Endless Summer” poster, a poster originally created for the 1966 film by Bruce Brown. 🎥

John Van Hamersveld, a surfer studying graphic design, created the movie poster at his kitchen table in Dana Point and it soon became the most recognized surf imagery in the world. 🏄‍♂️ “The photograph on which the poster is based was taken at Dana Point’s Salt Creek Beach using Bruce Brown, Robert August, and Mike Hynson as models.” (HMdb.org).

The mosaic is about 3’ 6” wide and 5’ 3” in height and is made from stained glass, smalti and fused glass. Mia Tavonatti is the same artist responsible for the new staircase mosaic at Lantern Bay Park that looks over the Dana Point Harbor.

He collaborated with the City of Dana Point’s Arts & Culture Commission and a “Call for Artists” was announced to the public in order to find the right artist for the job.

A group of graphic artists who grew up in Dana Point jumped at the opportunity to capture the City’s history through surf pioneers and local landmarks. “We wanted to show the progression of changes from the founding of the City of Dana Point. The original founding families that built the community from PCH to the Lantern streets, the homes, the hardware store, the gas station,” Soterios Anagnostou, owner and art director of Interior Branding, told the Dana Point Times in 2022.

The mural depicts historical photos, local surfing legends, and Dana Point landmarks. Using new technology, the final artwork was vinyl wrapped on the 16’x18’ wall near the post office in Doheny Village.

Artist: Steve Adam | Abstract Palm Series | 2022 | Pacific Coast Highway and Crown Valley Parkway

In 2020, the City of Dana Point began a call for artists to create locally inspired artwork to be featured on city-owned utility boxes. Local artist Steve Adam had his artwork chosen, with "Abstract Palm Series" being one of many variations of his brightly painted magical palm trees. This series from Adam is featured on multiple utility boxes throughout the city, and can also be seen on a large-scale elephant sculpture, part of the local Elephant Parade, as well as on a dolphin sculpture, located at Dana Bay Gallery on Del Prado Ave.

In 2011, local artist Lance Jost collaborated with Dana Point landscape architect Yvonne English to create the Mary Ellen Thomas Memorial Fountain located in La Plaza Park.

The fountain honors the late Mary Ellen Thomas, a local artist, historian and writer, who lobbied for the creation of a cultural arts commission in Dana Point in the 1990s. “She wanted to bring arts to our community” says Karin Schnell, current Arts & Culture Ambassador, and upon her passing, donated the funds to make the creation of this fountain possible.

“The fountain not only includes surfers, but Jost said the City wanted to see local marine life incorporated into it, which Jost researched.” Jost uses his home in Dana Point as a workshop and has created many of his art pieces here. “What makes Jost’s mosaics unique is his technique- ordinarily mosaics are made out of little pieces of glass arranged together, but because Jost is a sculptor, he carves pieces, molds them and casts them into glass.” (Both quotes taken from DP Times article, 2017)

He told the DP Times in 2017, “It’s wonderful because not only does it encourage local recreation but it promotes the arts.”

Dana Point is trademarked as the Dolphin and Whale Watching Capital of the World and was the first designated Whale Heritage Site in North America.
